Why Lighting Is One of the Most Overlooked Parts of Landscape Design

Picture
Outdoor spaces do not stop being useful when the sun goes down.
In fact, some of the best moments happen in the evening. A dinner with friends, a quiet walk through the garden, or simply sitting outside after a long day. Lighting plays a significant role in making those moments possible.

Here are a few things we think about.

1. Light should create atmosphere.
Rather than flooding a space with brightness, thoughtful lighting creates warmth and comfort. The goal is to highlight important elements without overwhelming the landscape.

2. Safety should feel seamless.
Paths, steps, and transitions benefit from subtle illumination that helps people move comfortably through the space.

3. Trees and architecture deserve attention.
Uplighting can emphasize the structure of a mature tree or reveal the texture of a stone wall. These details add depth and character after dark.

4. Outdoor living should extend into the evening.
Dining areas, lounges, and gathering spaces become more functional when lighting is integrated from the beginning of the design process.

5. Less is often more.

One of the most common mistakes we see is adding too much light. Strategic placement often creates a more refined and enjoyable experience.
Good lighting is not about drawing attention to itself. It is about making the landscape feel inviting long after sunset.
