Do You Actually Need a Designer for Your Project

Not every project needs a designer.

That might sound strange coming from a design build company, but it is the truth. The right approach depends on the scope, complexity, and goals of the project. Knowing when to bring in design and when to keep things simple can save time, money, and frustration.

Here is how we think about it.

When design build makes the most sense
Design build shines when a project has moving parts that need to work together from the start. If your project includes multiple elements like hardscape, planting, lighting, drainage, or structural features, having a clear design upfront creates alignment. It allows the team to think through layout, materials, elevations, and flow before anything is installed. It also removes guesswork in the field. Crews are not making decisions on the fly. Clients are not reacting to changes mid project. Everything is intentional.

This approach is especially valuable when:
  • You want a cohesive look and feel across the entire space
  • There are grade changes/drainage considerations
  • You are investing in higher end materials or custom features.
  • You want to fully understand the outcome before construction begins

When you might not need a designer

Some projects are straightforward.

If you are replacing an existing patio with the same layout, installing a simple walkway, or refreshing a small area without changing the overall structure, a full design process may not be necessary. In these cases, clarity comes from good communication, field experience, and a clear scope. The focus is on execution, not exploration.

You might not need a designer if:
  • The layout is already established and staying the same
  • There are minimal variables or unknowns
  • The project is small in scale and easy to visualize
  • You are comfortable making decisions as things move forward

There is nothing wrong with keeping things simple when the project allows for it.

Where people run into problems
Issues usually come up when a project sits in the middle. It is too complex to wing it, but not fully thought through ahead of time.

That is where miscommunication happens. Materials get selected late. Layouts shift during construction. Expectations and reality start to separate.
This is where design build brings clarity. It gives everyone the same target before work begins.

Our approach
We look at each project and ask one question first
What level of planning does this actually need
From there, we guide clients toward the approach that makes the most sense for their goals. Sometimes that means a full design build process. Sometimes it means keeping things focused and straightforward. The goal is not to push design on every project. The goal is to make sure the project is set up to succeed. If you are unsure which direction makes sense for your space, that is a good place to start the conversation.
